The beaches

Four different strands within a short walk of the walled town.

North Beach

Postcard view of pastel harbour houses, fishing boats and Goskar Rock. Best at sunrise. Rock pools around the rock at low tide.

Lifeguarded in season. Summer dog restrictions apply.

Castle Beach

Sheltered bay between Castle Hill and St Catherine’s Island. Named the UK’s best beach by The Times in 2019. Low-tide causeway to the Palmerston fort.

Some Caldey boats leave from here at low water.

Harbour Beach

Smallest of the four, inside the harbour walls. Shallow and sheltered for young children when the tide is in. The basin dries at low water.

Watch slipways and harbour walls.

South Beach

Widest sands, looking to Caldey Island and Penally. Room to walk even in August. Links to the Coast Path towards Giltar Point.

Long walk at low tide.

Just outside town

  • Penally Beach — quieter sands a mile south.
  • Giltar Point — rocky headland; proper shoes.
  • Caldey Beach — pale sand after the 20-minute crossing.

RNLI: never swim near harbour mouths. Respect flags. Strong rips can run on bigger swells.
